    James Darren Gidget

Gidget is a fictional character created by author Frederick Kohner (based on his teenage daughter, Kathy) in his 1957 book, Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas. The book follows the adventures of a teenage girl and her surfing friends on the beach in Malibu.

The name Gidget is a portmanteau of “girl” and “midget”. Following the book’s publication, the character featured in several movies, television series, and television movies.

The original Gidget was created by Frederick Kohner in his 1957 book Gidget, The Little Girl with Big Ideas (reprinted numerous times under the shortened title Gidget, by which it is more widely known), written in the first person and based on the accounts of his daughter Kathy (now Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman) of the surf culture of Malibu Point.

The book was published by Putnam. Kohner, a fecund screenwriter with one Academy Award nomination, published seven sequels to this book, five of the original books. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the character Gidget (the prototypical beach bunny) was adapted for three movies, all directed by Paul Wendkos and released by Columbia Pictures:

    • Gidget (1959), starring Sandra Dee.
    • Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961), starring Deborah Walley.
    • Gidget Goes to Rome (1963), starring Cindy Carol.

Darren had a good support role in a play, Diamond Head (1962) with Charlton Heston. He played Moondoggie a third time in Gidget Goes to Rome (1962) which he later said he “hated, I didn’t want to do it. I thought that I’d be doing those for the rest of my life.” He sang the title track for Under the Yum Yum Tree (1963).

James Darren This One’s from the Heart

This One’s from the Heart is a collection of songs that Darren sang on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as the hologram Vic Fontaine. One song he performed on the show was “The Alamo,” which was written especially for the show by Jay Chattaway, and does not feature on the CD.

This One’s from the Heart Tracklisting

    • “The Best Is Yet to Come” (from “Badda-Bing Badda-Bang”).
    • “Come Fly with Me” (from “His Way”).
    • “That Old Black Magic”.
    • “All the Way (from “Image in the Sand”).
    • “It’s Only a Paper Moon” (from “It’s Only a Paper Moon”).

    James Darren Goodbye Cruel World

Goodbye Cruel World” is a song written by Gloria Shayne Regney who, with her collaborator/husband, Noel Regney, also wrote the famously known Christmas carol, “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and several songs for singer Lesley Gore.

The most popular recording of this song is by Darren. With its release as a single in 1961, he scored his first top ten hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, at number three. On the Cash Box Top 100, it spent two weeks at number two. It would prove the biggest hit of his profession on this chart, as well as on the UK Singles Chart (no. 28).

The song was also used in a movie on Pop Art directed by Ken Russell for the BBC TV series Monitor which was aired in March 1962; its context here was the escape from the dying culture of the British Empire.

According to disc jockeys at the time the song was released, the calliope-like riff used in the song based on the “Entrance of the Gladiators” theme, was a synthesized recording of a woman’s voice rather than a musical instrument.

The song is about a man whose heart was broken by a “mean fickle woman“, and his plan to join the circus as a brokenhearted clown. He does not mind being shot out of a cannon and plans to tell the world that she “made a crying clown” out of him.

    James Darren Deep Space Nine

In 1998, Darren achieved renewed popularity as a singer through his appearances on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the role of the holographic crooner and adviser Vic Fontaine. Many of his vocal performances on the show were re-recorded for the album This One’s from the Heart (1999).

The album shows Darren, a close friend of Frank Sinatra, comfortably singing in the Sinatra style. The 2001 follow-up Because of You showed similar inspiration from Tony Bennett.

    James Darren Her Royal Majesty

Her Royal Majesty” is a song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and performed by Darren. It reached #6 on the U.S. pop chart and #36 on the UK Singles Chart in 1962. The song was arranged and produced by Stu Phillips.

The song ranked #80 on Billboard magazine’s Top 100 singles of 1962. Lee Dorsey released a version of the song on the 1992 album various artists album Million Dollar Hits.
